Mangal dada (Sunil Dutt) is the local dada of the busti whom everyone fears yet respects as he always stands up against any injustice and is always there to help and protect them. He likes Lakshmi (Reena Roy), a resident of the basti and a street performer, though she is unaware of his feelings. Pratap(Amjad Khan), a businessman has been eyeing the land of the bastiwallas but knows that Mangal will be an obstacle. So he sends a few of his goons to beat up Mangal. The goons come across Lakshmi and start teasing her. Mangal happens to be there and starts beating them up and just when he is about to kill one of them, the police arrive and he is arrested. The judge sentences him for imprisonment for one year and five months.
