Vellanakalude Nadu (English: Land of White Elephants) is a 1988 Indian Malayalam political satire film directed by Priyadarshan, written by Sreenivasan and produced by Maniyanpilla Raju. The film stars Mohanlal, Shobana, Thikkurissy, M. G. Soman, Sreenivasan, Karamana Janardanan Nair, Maniyanpilla Raju, Sukumari, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, and Lizy.
This film was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of the year. Priyadarshan later remade in Hindi as Khatta Meeta in 2010.[1]
A comedy sub-plot of the movie was based on the short story The Engine Trouble by R. K. Narayan. The core plot line of lead pair's changing opinion over the years about the ethics to be followed in life was based on O. Henry's short story After Twenty Years found in his collection of short stories The Four Million.
